We are pleased to announce the launch of Team Surfrider and a new partnership with Positive Tracks, a national organization that combines philanthropy and athletics to enroll youth (ages 23 and under) as partners, leaders and participants in making the world better, starting with themselves. Surfrider has joined forces with Positive Tracks, to help youth supporters sweat for good to benefit Surfrider, an activity that Generation Next is eager to get involved in. Our Surfrider Youth Clubs will use Positive Tracks U23 Challenges Program to raise funds and awareness for the preservation and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Surfrider Foundation to help their youth audience give back to Surfrider using their own muscle, says Liz Gray, Positive Tracks' U23 Challenges Program manager. "The end goal is to help young people recognize that they can become hands on leaders. To spark this activity, we provide plenty of help where kids need it most - from critical guidance with logistical planning, community outreach and team building, to fundraising tools, web pages and matching dollar incentives. We also pair each captain with a Peer Coach who's done a U23 Challenge, a nice perk that keeps it fun and ensures that we meet kids on their own terms and turf."
The concept is simple: Connect with students looking to make a difference; listen closely to their own ideas and vision; help them learn skills related to organizing, team-building and fundraising; add a whole lot of fun via sports and the outdoors; and BINGO! You've cultivated a community ambassador who's eager to introduce others to Surfrider's activities and mission. Challenges can range from running, volleyball, SUP, swimming, beach obstacle course, ski/snowboard vertical challenge, and much more. Best news is: These activities can tie back to Surfrider's mission, initiatives and programs.
On December 4th, Team Surfrider will participate in the North Face Endurance Challenge at the Golden Gate Recreation Area, San Francisco, CA. Our northern California clubs: UC Berkeley, St. Mary’s College, as well as, Redwood, Sir Francis Drake and Menlo-Atherton High Schools will be competing in the 5K trail run. In addition, Surfrider staff, Nancy Eiring and Ericka Canales, will also be competing in the trail marathon with 4500 feet of climbing the day before to also raise funds and awareness. “We look forward to taking our personal passion for endurance races and Surfrider Foundation to the trails while mentoring these students to believe they can accomplish amazing things mentally and physically, as well as, an individual and/or team,” says Ericka Canales, Surfrider's Youth Club Manager.
To date, the Surfrider youth club network is in 60 schools across the U.S. More clubs will participate in Team Surfrider events in the Spring 2017, including the already committed UNC-Wilmington (UNCW) College Club entering the prestigious Carolina SUP Cup in April, one of the biggest standup paddleboard races in the world. "As the Club Chair I cannot express how excited we are to be apart of this new approach to fundraising for our organization, says Darren Meyer, UNCW graduating senior."
