Introducing Our New Climate Action Program Manager!

IMG-4325

Carla brings a wealth of experience in environmental conservation, restoration, natural resource planning, and community engagement. With her enthusiasm for restoration, Carla is excited to lead Surfrider's new national Climate Action Program. Surfrider’s Climate Action Program is a first line of defense against the impacts of climate change on our coasts. The Climate Action Program includes on-the-ground nature-based coastal resilience and adaptation projects such as mangrove, coastal dunes, wetland, and riparian habitat restoration, and living shorelines. As the Climate Action Program Manager, Carla will support chapters to participate in and implement restoration projects in their communities. We are so excited to have her on board! Now let’s learn a bit about her:

What’s your favorite marine animal and why?

Seal

Oh, the harbor seal is definitely my favorite marine animal! There's something absolutely adorable about these chunky playful creatures that just melts my heart. I love how they effortlessly navigate through the water, gracefully diving and swimming with such agility. Their big eyes make them incredibly charming. I like their adaptability to both land and sea. They can haul out on rocky shores, basking in the sun, and then effortlessly slip back into the water for a swim.

What have been the highlights of your career so far?

There have been several incredible highlights in my career that I hold dear to my heart. One of the best experiences was working on the Redwoods Rising project, where I had the privilege of contributing to the restoration and protection of this ancient majestic forest in Northern California. Another fulfilling experience was working on salmonid restoration projects throughout Humboldt County. Seeing these magnificent creatures come back and knowing that our restoration efforts played a part in their success was incredibly rewarding. It reminded me of the importance of restoration and the positive impact we can make when we work together.

Another significant highlight was collaborating with communities to reduce illegal dumping. Being able to actively engage with local residents, raise awareness about the detrimental effects of illegal dumping, and work towards finding sustainable solutions was both fulfilling and empowering. Seeing the positive change and the collective effort of the community in preserving and protecting their environment was truly inspiring.

These experiences have solidified my passion for environmental restoration. They have shown me the power of collaboration, and the immense satisfaction that comes from working towards a common goal with like-minded individuals. Being able to witness tangible results and make a positive impact on both ecosystems and communities has been the greatest reward of my career so far

What are three fun facts about yourself?

IMG-1133

  1. I absolutely love backpacking and immersing myself in nature. There's something so freeing about strapping on a backpack, hitting the trails, and venturing into the wilderness. Setting up camp under the starry sky and waking up to the crisp morning air is an adventure that always rejuvenates my spirit.
  2. I’m a purple belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu! I’ve been training for over 10 years and still love getting to practice this martial art.
  3. I traveled for several months throughout western South America. I got to visit Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. While in Bolivia with the help of a guide I summited Huayna Potosi, a 19,974 foot mountain! From the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru to the colorful streets of Cartagena in Colombia, I'm thankful to have had the opportunity my fair share of incredible adventures.

Why is being a part of the Surfrider ocean conservation community important to you?

IMG-3851

Growing up near the Pacific Ocean and living right on the coast in Humboldt County, I developed a profound connection to coastal environments. Being a part of Surfrider allows me to actively contribute to the protection and restoration of our precious coastal ecosystems. Being a part of the Surfrider conservation community provides me with the opportunity to channel my passion, collaborate with dedicated individuals, engage with communities, and actively contribute to the protection of our beautiful coasts. It's an opportunity to turn my love for the ocean into meaningful action and work towards a more sustainable and thriving future for our coastal communities and environments.

What are you most excited about in your role as the Climate Action Program Manager?

I am incredibly excited about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in my role. One of the things that excites me the most is the chance to lead and build Surfrider's national Climate Action Program. It's a significant responsibility, but it also presents a tremendous opportunity to make a real impact in addressing climate change through promoting nature-based solutions and reduction of fossil fuels use. I am thrilled to work closely with Surfrider's chapter network and student clubs. Together, we can develop and implement on-the-ground projects that enhance coastal resilience and restore habitats to build a more resilient and sustainable future for everyone.
