A long-time volunteer with the Surfrider San Francisco chapter, Shannon was brought on as staff in 2016 to lead a new initiative called Smartfin. The Smartfin is a surfboard fin with sensors that can measure ocean properties like temperature, location, salinity, wave characteristics, and pH. Shannon leads the collaboration and communication between Smartfin partners and helps chapters distribute Smartfins to surfers around the world for this massive citizen science project. Shannon comes to Surfrider with experience in environmental education, government relations, and ocean health research, and is well-versed on topics like ocean acidification and plastic pollution. When not surfing the Smartfin, Shannon enjoys hiking, swimming, and camping in her native San Diego.
