On Saturday, February 23rd, the Surfrider Foundation honored their 2012 Wavemakers at Cannon’s Seafood Grill in Dana Point. This annual awards ceremony honors individuals and companies for their outstanding volunteer efforts and support to help the Foundation fulfill its mission of protecting our world’s oceans, waves and beaches.

To raise awareness about our world’s water issues and the small changes individuals can do to help, Surfrider Foundation is proud to bring back the “3 Second Movie Contest” presented by Teva and Finlandia Vodka. Between now and March 15th, the Surfrider Foundation is challenging participants to capture the essence of water in just three seconds. The top movie selections will be compiled into a short set to release on March 22nd – World Water Day.

SAN MATEO COUNTY RULES MARTIN’S BEACH IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Today, Judge Davis granted the County of San Mateo District Attorney’s motion to dismiss the trespassing charges filed against five surfers accessing Martin’s Beach.

OREGON TERRITORIAL SEA PLAN APPROVED

After nearly five years of data collection, stakeholder engagement and public process that included the Surfrider Foundation and its Oregon Chapter Network, the State of Oregon approved a Territorial Sea Plan to protect special recreational and ecological places, including key surf spots, while creating opportunities for renewable ocean energy development.

Pennywise frontman and “Punk Rock Dad” author Jim Lindberg can add another line to his expanding resume – Surfrider Foundation board member. Surfrider Foundation’s Board of Directors recently appointed Jim to serve on the board for a two-year term, during which he will focus on fundraising efforts and expanding the Foundation’s relationships with tastemakers in the music industry.

COASTAL COMMISSION DENIES PG&E SEISMIC TESTING PERMIT

After eight hours of testimony that included comments from Surfrider Foundation, activists and ocean lovers alike, the California Coastal Commission denied Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) the necessary permit to conduct seismic testing off the Central California Coast. The Commission unanimously found the project inconsistent with the Coastal Act.

The Surfrider Foundation is calling on supporters to rally next Wednesday, November 14th in opposition of a proposed seismic testing project along California’s Central Coast. The rally will take place during the California Coastal Commission meeting at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

The Surfrider Foundation and San Francisco-based BlooSee Incorporated announced today a “mapping partnership” that integrates technology and ocean conservation. The goal of the partnership is to provide Surfrider Foundation supporters and volunteers with information about current campaigns, coastal water quality updates, upcoming beach cleanups, and chapter locations utilizing BlooSee’s mapping system and technology resources.

Beginning September 15 and running through November 15, the Aquarium of the Pacific will be the first to host the Surfrider Foundation’s inaugural Ocean Armor art exhibit to educate visitors and raise awareness about coastal issues affecting the world’s coastlines. Also debuting on September 15 at the Aquarium of the Pacific is Ocean in Motion, a multimedia experience where visitors can learn ways to help conserve the ocean and its resources.
