Surf For A Cause, Give Back and Win Prizes

In celebration of the 6th Annual International Surfing Day on June 20th, the Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine have announced a variety of on-site challenges from filmmaking to beach cleanups, art projects to surf contests at 200 locations worldwide. This year’s “challenges” and prizes are sponsored by: Vitamin Water, Electric, Ocean Minded, Matix, DVS, O’Neill, Reef, Sector Nine, Globe, Vans, Volcom, Billabong, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, and Spy Optics.

“One of the things we’re looking forward to at this year’s International Surfing Day celebrations is a big step-up in athlete and brand challenge participation,” says Surfing Magazine’s editor-in-chief Travis Ferré. “We have some amazing prizes up for grabs from the surf world’s best brands, and are excited to see the creative entries that come in from around the world.”

In addition, to the myriad of challenges taking place globally, join the Huntington/Seal Beach and Newport Beach chapters, Surfing Magazine and Vitamin Water at the Huntington Beach Pier for a 7:30 AM beach clean up. Attendees will not only have the opportunity to give back to our oceans, waves and beaches, but they can cheer on the surfers participating in the final hours of Project Save Our Surf SURF-24, a 24 Hour Surf-A-Thon that kicks off International Surfing Day.

Founded six years ago by the Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine, International Surfing Day unites surfers from around the world in celebration of the sport of surfing. As is tradition with the annual holiday, surfers will do their part to give back to our oceans, waves and beaches through various organized events such as clean-ups and restoration projects courtesy of the Surfrider Foundation.

Since its beginnings in 2005 with only 14 domestic and 4 international locations, ISD has grown in heaps and bounds to record over 105 worldwide events in 2009, and engage countries such as Sweden, Mauritius, Korea, West Africa and Taiwan. In addition to becoming truly “international” in scope, the Surfrider Foundation uses ISD to host a special membership drive and since 2007 has signed up nearly 3,000 new members. This year, ISD has a confirmed 200 events taking place worldwide, including 73 in the United States.
