Please tell the regional water board to adjust the Clean Water Act permit to protect Humboldt Bay!
Dear Friend of Surfrider,
A meeting of the North Coast Regional Water Board this Thursday, October 5th, will have a major impact on water quality in Humboldt Bay. Surfrider is urging activists to defend the Bay from weak sewage treatment standards that threaten to make us sick and harm marine ecosystems.
Sign the petition requesting changes to the proposed Clean Water Act Permit for the Elk River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Requests include:
Faster ‘compliance schedule’ to eliminate up to a decade of toxic discharges of human waste, chlorine, ammonia and other pollutants getting pumped into the bay
Water quality testing for bacteria in at least four sites in the Bay to inform recreationalists and the City of where and when sewage is leading to unsafe water quality
Plan for sea level rise so we don’t see plant failure and disastrous sewage spills as a result of flooding
The Clean Water Act Permit being considered will guide the City’s actions to manage the Elk River Treatment for the next five years. Let’s ensure the City takes this time to clean up their Bay discharges and prepare for sea level rise.
