Decommission California's Offshore Drilling Rigs

California's offshore drilling operations were approved over 35 years ago and are nearing (or have already reached) the end of their lifespans. They pose a major pollution threat as evidenced by the 2021 Amplify Energy oil spill and aging infrastructure means a higher risk of oil spills and other accidents

Surfrider is supporting federal and state agency efforts to advance decommissioning of California's offshore oil and gas infrastructure including the Dept. of Interior's development of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Surfrider also supports legislative approaches to expedite the decommissioning process.

While CA Senate Bill 953 did not make it through the 2021 legislative session , we will continue to work with state leaders to facilitate a multi-pronged approach necessary for safe and swift decommissioning of existing oil infrastructure.
