City of Los Angeles Plastic Straws Upon Request Ordinance

On March 1st, 2019, the Los Angeles City Council passed an ordinance that requires all food and beverage facilities in the City of Los Angeles to only offer plastic straws upon request!

Volunteers from the Surfrider Foundation LA and South Bay chapters advocated for this coastal victory by raising awareness about the issue and speaking at city council meetings.

The ‘Plastic Straws on Request’ ordinance will take effect on Earth Day 2019 (April 22) for businesses with 26 employees or more, and all food and beverage facilities by Oct. 1, 2019.

Food or beverage facility for this ordinance means a facility located in the City of Los Angeles that sells or otherwise provides prepared food or beverages for consumption on or off its premises, and includes, but is not limited to, a shop, sales outlet, restaurant, bar, pub, coffee shop, coffee stand, juice bar, cafeteria, caterer, convenience store, liquor store, grocery store, supermarket, delicatessen, mobile food truck, roadside stand, kiosks, carts, or any organization, group or individual that regularly provides prepared food or beverages as part of its service.
