Seattle WA - Plastic Bag Ban

The Surfrider Foundation Seattle Chapter worked with members of City Council and other environmental groups to raise public awareness about the dangers of plastics to the environment and pass a plastic bag ordinance. On Monday December 19th, 2011 the Seattle City Council voted 9-0 to pass a citywide bill that will ban plastic bags and require a five cent fee on paper bags at checkout. Grocers and most retailers are covered by the bill. The Surfrider Foundation Seattle Chapter worked to raise awareness of the issues and be part of the legislative process by rallying the community and testifying at city council hearings.
