Surfrider’s ISD events will take place worldwide in recognition of surfing and the protection of our ocean and coasts
On Saturday, June 15, the Surfrider Foundation and international affiliates will host events worldwide in recognition of the 15th International Surfing Day (ISD) to celebrate the sport of surfing and the protection of clean water and healthy beaches. Held every year on the third Saturday of June, the global holiday founded by the Surfrider Foundation brings communities together to enjoy coastal recreation and raise awareness of urgent threats to the coasts.
This year, the Surfrider Foundation is joining forces with WSL PURE, the World Surf League’s non-profit arm, which stands for Protecting, Understanding and Respecting the Environment, to raise awareness of the climate crisis and encourage everyone to take the pledge to #StopTrashingWaves. Global events will include symbolic paddle outs at key locations to demonstrate the shared vision keeping our ocean and beaches healthy and vibrant for the future.
“Surfrider’s volunteer-led network of coastal defenders worldwide are taking action every day to be ocean stewards of our natural playground,” said Surfrider’s Marketing Director, Eddie Anaya. “This International Surfing Day, we’re banding together to bring as many people to the beach as possible to enjoy the stoke of surfing and encourage everyone to contribute to protecting our coastlines.”
Established in 2005 by the Surfrider Foundation, International Surfing Day has grown into a worldwide activation with up to 200 events in more than 30 countries with over one million participants in the last decade. ISD celebrations have taken place in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, France, the UK, Argentina, Japan, and coastal communities across the U.S.
“Last week, the WSL announced our commitments to go carbon neutral globally, eliminate single-serve plastic from our events, and leave every beach better than we found it,” said the Executive Director of WSL PURE, Reece Pacheco. “This is our way to #stoptrashingwaves and together with Surfrider, we’re calling on surfers around the world to join us in this commitment and show the world that the surf community is here to protect our ocean.”
