What a Night at Two Coasts: One Ocean Fundraiser in Montauk, NY!

Montauk, NY. A special place with beautiful coasts, great surf and a rich maritime history. Surfrider Foundation was excited to return to this picturesque setting at the eastern end of Long Island for our second annual Two Coasts: One Ocean fundraiser event. On Saturday, August 13, 2016, loyal supporters gathered at the stunning Edward Vincent Ecker, Sr County Park and exceeded our fundraising goal for two critical, local projects that will contribute to our national mission to protect 100% of the coast:

Eastern Long Island Clean Water Initiative
Montauk Coastal Preservation Project

The Eastern Long Island Clean Water Initiative will expand Surfrider's water testing program, the Blue Water Task Force, to monitor new sites and alert the community about where and when it is safe to swim. The Montauk Coastal Preservation Project will commission innovative research to protect Eastern Long Island's coastline from sea level rise and coastal erosion.

Musical stylings of Savannah Buffet greeted guests as they entered the park. In an inviting atmosphere curated by our new partner, Huka Entertainment, the event host committee and attendees included a who’s who of locally devoted influential figures (and surfer-activists) including Julie Gilhart, Julia Chaplin, Justin Portman, Mikey & Lisa Detemple, Luke Weil, Chris Gentile, Andrea Tese, Peter Davis, Michael Dweck, Jayma Cardoso, and Pro Surfers Balaram Stack and Pat Schmidt.

As sweeping sunset views filled the sky above Fort Pond Bay, local acoustic duo, The Sturdy Souls- featuring guitarist Kevin Angiulo- drew guests to the waters edge for a memorable performance before they gathered for a formal, locally sourced seated dinner by Exquisite Catering against the natural coastal backdrop.

Program highlights included the exclusive debut of short film, “Into the Sea” by surfer, photographer and filmmaker Mikey Detemple commissioned by Surfrider Foundation. The film showcased familiar faces from Montauk and the urgency of our mission work out on the east end. A friendly competitive spirit raced through the crowd during the silent and live auction, which featured an exclusive trip to Volcom’s Pipeline house on the North Shore of Oahu, VIP trip to Las Vegas to see Coldplay, and a one-of-a-kind Thom Browne custom surfboard straight off the runway in Paris!

Surfrider Foundation’s Two Coasts: One Ocean events unite our efforts on both coasts to preserve our favorite beaches and ultimately, protect our ocean for future generations. Next stop, Two Coasts: One Ocean in Malibu on Saturday September 17!! We hope you will join us as we come together for another memorable evening - this time on the west coast, in the neighborhood where it all began for Surfrider almost 33 years ago. This is your opportunity to celebrate and protect the places you love. Space is limited. To sponsor the event or attend as a guest, please visit the event page.

A huge thank you to Huka Entertainment, the hard working volunteers of the Eastern Long Island chapter and our generous Two Coasts: One ocean event sponsors and auction donors!
