Sign this action alert to federal representatives to oppose offshore drilling.
Just days after Senate members proposed new offshore drilling in the Atlantic, the Obama Administration has announced plans to expand oil and gas development in our oceans. The Draft 5 Year OCS Oil & Gas Leasing Program includes scheduled drilling for the Atlantic (see image), Arctic and Gulf of Mexico for 2017 to 2022.
Following the announcement, Surfrider issued a media release expressing strong dismay at Obama's plans to expand drilling in our oceans. New offshore drilling will damage both the marine environment and related economies, while exposing our coasts to the risk of a catastrophic oil spill.
The Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has opened a 60 day comment period for citizens to provide feedback on the Draft 5 Year Drilling Plan. BOEM is also holding public hearings on the Atlantic coast in the coming weeks.
The Surfrider Foundation encourages all citizens concerned about our ocean ecosystems and coastal economies to submit online comments and attend a public hearing to provide testimony against new offshore drilling in our oceans!
