North Shore Beach Management Plan

Victory! Hawai'i Passes Legislation to Fund A North Shore Beach Management Plan

The North Shore of Oʻahu is one of the most iconic stretches of beach in the world, but also faces significant challenges balancing coastal erosion with private property and public infrastructure.

One recommendation of the North Shore Coastal Resilience Working Group (led by the Surfrider Foundation, Sea Grant, and SSFM International) was the development of a comprehensive North Shore Beach Management plan that will provide an extensive analysis of the existing state of the beach from Sunset Point to Kapoʻo (Sharks Cove) and recommend management measures for federal, state, and local government as well as community partners.

Surfrider Foundation therefore strongly supported the passage of HB2248 that appropriates funds to the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant college program to develop a North Shore Beach Management plan for the North Shore of O'ahu from Sunset point to the Kapoʻo (Sharks Cove) area. This will act as a critical step forward in developing management actions that preserve our public beaches while also addressing the challenges of private property, public infrastructure, and beach access.
