Support Senate Bill 1178 (Padilla)
Surfrider and our 50+ coalition partners are urging our members to support Senate Bill 1178 (Padilla). This bill will require large corporations based in California, but operating in Mexico, to disclose their wastewater discharges and mitigate the contamination.
Yes, large companies are still straight up dumping industrial waste into the Tijuana River Watershed, contributing to one of the worst public health and environmental justice emergencies in the nation. In addition to the raw sewage that is plaguing the area, it is well known that large multinational corporations currently take advantage of cheap labor costs and lax environmental protections in Mexico, producing products in Tijuana for sale in California that ultimately pollute our waterways. SB 1178, also called the California Water Quality & Public Health Protection Act, aims to make these polluters pay. This bill is a creative approach to corporate accountability for one of the major sources of ongoing pollution to the Tijuana Watershed. Join Surfrider, our expanding local coalition, and Senator Padilla in supporting SB 1178.
