Q: How and when did your Student Club form?
El Club Estudiantil Surfrider de TASIS Dorado se formó en septiembre de 2022, motivado por la pasión y el deseo de crear una comunidad de personas con ideas afines que se dedican a proteger nuestras costas.
(English) The TASIS Dorado Surfrider Club was formed in September 2022 driven by passion and eagerness to create a community of like-minded individuals who advocate for the protection of our coastlines.
Q: Why did you want to start a Surfrider Student Club?
Busqué estimular la conciencia y aumentar la participación de mis compañeros en la defensa del medio ambiente y la acción local. Observé una falta de discusión entre jóvenes y adultos sobre la crisis climática y nuestra responsabilidad de proteger nuestra tierra y costas, razón por la cual busqué comenzar el primer Club Estudiantil de Surfrider en Puerto Rico y el Caribe. Mi amor por el océano y las olas son los impulsores de mi pasión por proteger y espero continuar difundiendo ese mensaje a los demás. Espero que mis acciones inspiren a otros a convertirse en el cambio que quieren ver en sus comunidades.
(English) I sought to stimulate awareness and increase the involvement of my peers in environmental advocacy and local action. I observed a lack of discussion between youth and adults regarding the climate crisis and our responsibility to protect our land and coasts, which is the reason I sought to start the first Surfrider Student Club in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. My love for the ocean and waves are drivers for my passion to protect and I hope to continue to spread that message to others. I hope my actions will inspire others to become the change they want to see in their communities.
Q: What are some environmental issues that are affecting your local community?
La tasa de pobreza en Puerto Rico es aproximadamente del 43.5%. Los impactos negativos del cambio climático se sienten severamente en las comunidades que dependen de los recursos naturales, especialmente cuando hay recursos limitados disponibles para distribuir a los necesitados. Los efectos de los problemas ambientales se ven reforzados por nuestra alta tasa de pobreza y se prevé que continúen aumentando a medida que cambie nuestro clima. El aumento del nivel del mar, los huracanes más frecuentes y fuertes, así como las inundaciones y la erosión costera son solo la superficie de los problemas que mi comunidad local enfrenta a diario.
(English) The poverty rate in Puerto Rico is roughly 43.5%. The negative impacts of climate change are severely felt in communities that depend on natural resources, especially when there are limited resources available to distribute to those in need. The effects of environmental issues are enhanced by our high poverty rate and are projected to continue increasing as our climate changes. Rising sea levels, more frequent and stronger hurricanes, as well as flooding, and coastal erosion are just the surface issues that my local community faces daily.
Q: What Surfrider projects has your club worked on?
El TASIS Dorado Surfrider Club ha colaborado en diversos proyectos con el Programa Surfrider Puerto Rico, que abarcan la restauración de manglares, la recuperación de dunas de arena, la realización de pruebas de calidad del agua junto al Grupo de Trabajo de Agua Azul, la instalación de letreros interpretativos en las playas y la limpieza de las mismas. También, hemos participado en diálogos comunitarios con otras organizaciones locales con el propósito de establecer conexiones adicionales en pro de la protección. Más recientemente, los miembros del club han impulsado discusiones y acciones para obtener la certificación de "Ocean Friendly Restaurants" en Dorado, Puerto Rico. Esto no solo ha despertado el interés de restaurantes locales, sino que también se ha convertido en un proyecto destinado a crear una experiencia gastronómica completamente sostenible y amigable con el océano en Dorado.
(English) The TASIS Dorado Surfrider Club has engaged in projects with the Surfrider Puerto Rico Program including mangrove restoration, sand dune restoration, water quality testing with the Blue Water Task Force, installation of interpretive signs at beaches, and beach cleanups. We have also engaged in community discussions with other local organizations in order to create further connections to protect. Most recently, club members have stirred discussion and action toward certification of Ocean Friendly Restaurants in Dorado, Puerto Rico. This has not only opened the doors of interest for many local restaurants, but it has also become a project to create a completely ocean-friendly, and sustainable, dining experience in Dorado.
Q: Are there any specific project(s) that your club has worked on that benefited your community? If so, can you tell us about that?
Debido a la devastación causada por el huracán María en 2017, los bosques de manglares de Puerto Rico estaban y siguen necesitando una restauración urgente. TASIS Dorado Surfrider junto con Surfrider Puerto Rico han estado trabajando juntos para replantar los manglares con el fin de revivir el ecosistema, que no solo fortalece nuevos hábitats, sino que también sirve como una barrera natural de protección para las comunidades costeras. Las plántulas de manglar se plantan a lo largo de los marismas en áreas que han sido destruidas, creando un nuevo crecimiento y raíces sobre las que construir. La Reserva Natural Comunitaria Mabodamaca en Isabela es uno de los bosques de manglares que Surfrider Puerto Rico se ha propuesto rehabilitar, ya que después del huracán María se perdió el 95% del bosque. La restauración de manglares continúa siendo un proyecto importante para nosotros en Puerto Rico, y ver las áreas comenzar a regresar a un estado saludable ha sido un gran motivador para seguir adelante.
Puerto Rico se enorgullece de tener una temporada navideña de casi cincuenta días. Dicho esto, piense en todos los árboles que se botan en enero cuando la gente finalmente decide poner el espíritu navideño a descansar. Después de leer sobre el capítulo Cape Fear de la Fundación Surfrider restaurando dunas de arena con árboles de Navidad, pensé ¿por qué no podíamos hacer lo mismo? A principios de enero de 2023, creé folletos para promover el proyecto en la municipalidad. Después de eso, recibí alrededor de dos docenas de llamadas en mi teléfono de personas interesadas en reciclar sus árboles. Con correas en el techo de mi carro y un baúl abierto, manejé por la comunidad recogiendo los árboles de Navidad. El 15 de enero, varios miembros del club y yo llevamos los árboles en dos guaguas hacia el oeste hasta las dunas de arena en La Reserva Natural Comunitaria Mabodamaca en Isabela para instalarlos. Utilizamos una paleta de madera entre dos árboles para mantenerlos en su lugar, todo en una sola fila a lo largo de la arena. Casi ocho meses después, los árboles siguen en pie y las dunas han comenzado a tomar forma. Esto ha sido un punto culminante de mi experiencia porque no solo fue la primera vez que se hizo aquí en Puerto Rico, sino que cada vez que paso por las dunas puedo apreciar el progreso lento pero gratificante de algo que construimos como comunidad activista. Gracias a Héctor Varela, organizador comunitario de Surfrider Puerto Rico y leyenda en la comunidad, pudimos completar este proyecto con poca antelación. Planeamos hacer de este proyecto una nueva tradición navideña.
(English) Because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017, Puerto Rico’s mangrove forests were and continue to be in dire need of restoration. The TASIS Dorado Surfrider club along with Surfrider Puerto Rico have been working together to replant the mangroves in order to revive the ecosystem, which not only strengthens new habitats but also serves as a natural barrier of protection for coastal communities. The mangrove seedlings are planted along mudflats in areas that have been destroyed creating new growth and roots to build upon. La Reserva Natural Comunitaria Mabodamaca en Isabela is one of the mangrove forests Surfrider Puerto Rico has targeted to rehabilitate, as after Hurricane Maria 95% of the forest was lost. Mangrove restoration continues to be a significant project for us in Puerto Rico, and watching the areas begin returning to a healthy state has been a great motivator to keep going.
Puerto Rico takes pride in having a nearly fifty-day holiday season for Christmas. With that being said, think of all of the trees that are thrown away in January when people finally decide to put the Christmas spirit to rest. After reading about the Surfrider Foundation's Cape Fear chapter restoring sand dunes with Christmas trees, I thought why couldn’t we do the same? In early January 2023, I created fliers to promote the project around town. After that, I had about two dozen calls on my phone from people interested in recycling their trees. With straps on the roof of my car and an open trunk, I drove around town collecting the community's Christmas trees. On January 15th, several club members and I loaded the trees into two vans and drove west to the sand dunes in La Reserva Natural Comunitaria Mabodamaca en Isabela to install them. We used a wooden pallet between two trees to keep them in place, all in a single file along the sand. Nearly eight months later, the trees are still standing and the dunes have begun to take form. This has been a highlight of my experience because not only was it the first time it has been done here, but each time I drive by the dunes I am able to appreciate the slow yet rewarding progress of something that we built as an activist community. Thanks to Hector Varela, Surfrider Puerto Rico’s community organizer and overall legend in the community, we were able to get the project up and running on short notice. We plan to make this project a new Christmas tradition.
Q: What has been the highlight of your club's Surfrider experience (i.e., campaign, program, victory)?
Tener la oportunidad de conectarme con miembros de la comunidad, líderes, estudiantes y jóvenes ha ampliado mi perspectiva y conocimiento de la esencialidad de la comunidad al permitir el cambio a través de la defensa. Con el establecimiento del segundo club estudiantil en Puerto Rico poco después de TASIS, he podido trabajar estrechamente con estudiantes de toda la isla que no solo son apasionados por la protección costera, sino que ponen sus almas en su trabajo haciéndolo aún más alegre. A veces es difícil dar los primeros pasos para crear una red de jóvenes desde cero, pero he descubierto que hay muchas maneras de involucrar a la gente y la verdad es que hay muchas personas que están dispuestas a actuar, es posible que aún no las hayas encontrado. Estoy eternamente agradecida por la dedicación y el amor dentro de la comunidad de Surfrider y me siento inspirada para continuar construyendo una comunidad de agentes de cambio en Puerto Rico.
(English) Being able to connect with community members, leaders, students, and youth has broadened my perspective and knowledge of the essentiality of community when enabling change through advocacy. With the establishment of the second student club in Puerto Rico shortly after TASIS, I have been able to work closely with students across the island who are not only passionate about coastal protection but put their souls into their work making it all the more joyous. At times it felt difficult to get out there and take the first steps to create a network of youth from scratch, but I have found that there are so many ways to get people involved and the truth is that there are many people out there who are willing to take action, you just may not have found them yet. I am forever grateful for the dedication and love within the Surfrider community and am inspired to continue building a community of changemakers in Puerto Rico.
Q: Do you have any personal experiences or campaigns/issues that your club is passionate about where the social justice and environmental movements have intersected? If so, can you tell us about them?
Desde 1979, la ley en Puerto Rico establece que las playas deben contar con acceso público. Las playas son para el disfrute de la gente, pero inversores privados y los desarrolladores inmobiliarios en ocasiones han operado sin los permisos adecuados, vulnerando este derecho. La protección de los recursos públicos es una preocupación constante en Puerto Rico, y nuestro club y los capítulos/organizaciones locales han estado luchando al dialogar con legisladores locales y nacionales, participando en manifestaciones públicas, iniciando peticiones y llevando a cabo campañas en las redes sociales como "Las Playas Son Del Pueblo."
(English) Since 1979, by law, Puerto Rico’s beaches must have public access. Our beaches are for the people yet there have been circumstances where private investors and real estate developers have failed to acquire proper permits violating the right to access. Protection of public resources is a consistent problem in Puerto Rico that our club and local chapters/organizations have been combating by speaking with local and national officials, acting in public demonstrations, starting petitions, and promoting strong social media campaigns like “Las Playas Son Del Pueblo”
Q: What is the most important thing you tell others about Surfrider?
El océano necesita más amigos. Usted puede ser parte del cambio para proteger nuestro océano, olas y playas y todo comienza con su voz.
(English) The ocean needs more friends. You can be a part of the change to protect our ocean, waves, and beaches and it all starts with your voice.
Q: Why is being a part of the Surfrider ocean conservation community important to your club?
Vivir en Puerto Rico me ha brindado la oportunidad de ver de primera mano la necesidad de la conservación costera, la protección y la defensa local. Como ávido amante del océano, siento que es mi responsabilidad proteger nuestro océano y playas y alentar a otros a mantener ese mismo respeto. Es nuestra responsabilidad mantener la seguridad, accesibilidad y disfrute de nuestras playas para todos.
(English) Living in Puerto Rico has provided me with the opportunity to see firsthand the necessity of coastal conservation, protection, and local advocacy. As an avid ocean lover, I feel it is my responsibility to protect our ocean and beaches and encourage others to hold that same respect. It is our responsibility to maintain the safety, accessibility, and enjoyment of our beaches for all.
