The Surfrider Foundation just launched the Ocean Friendly Hotels Program!
This program recognizes hotels that are committed to cutting out unnecessary single-use plastic and offers a simple, straightforward framework to help them make sustainable choices for our ocean. The larger we grow our network of ocean-friendly business leaders, the more mainstream the concept of single-use plastic-free becomes!
To celebrate, The South OC Chapter connected with General Manager of Hotel Joaquin, Katie Cahill to hear about their ocean-friendly practices and why they joined the new program.

Please tell us about your hotel. What makes it a special destination for your guests, and how is your location connected to the ocean?
Hotel Joaquin is a boutique property nestled just above Shaw's Cove in Laguna Beach. Our mission is to assist our guests in disconnecting from the chaos of the outside world in order to reconnect with themselves, their travel partners and the environment. We do not have televisions on our property, offering an alternative of in-room record players and an extensive record collection. In addition to enjoying the beach, guests are welcome to participate in complimentary weekly yoga classes, sound baths and meditations, guided hikes, astrology readings, movie nights, and our heated saltwater pool.
The ocean plays a huge role in helping our visitors find peace and serenity. The hotel provides snorkel gear, beach setups, a communal library and sustainably packed picnics. We strongly believe that our sustainability initiatives are designed to minimize our impact on the environment, ensuring that the beauty of Laguna Beach remains unspoiled for future generations. From our eco-friendly amenities to our participation in local conservation efforts, we’re committed to preserving the very ecosystem that makes our hotel such a special destination. We want every stay to feel like a harmonious blend of luxury, tranquility, and a deep connection to the ocean. It's a place where guests can unwind, reconnect with nature, and create unforgettable memories along one of California’s most iconic coastlines.

Why did you decide to join Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Hotels program?
We strongly believe in Surfrider's mission to protect the environment and oceans. As residents of a coastal community, promoting this culture is extremely important to us. We're excited at the opportunity to participate in this program and do our part.
Why do you think it’s important for the hospitality industry to prioritize sustainability? What role can you see the industry playing in protecting our ocean?
We believe prioritizing sustainability is essential for the hospitality industry because our business thrives on the beauty and health of our environment. Guests seek out destinations like ours for their natural charm, and it's our responsibility to preserve these treasures for future generations. Sustainable practices not only help protect the environment but also enhance guest experiences by promoting a connection with nature. By reducing waste, conserving resources, and promoting eco-friendly choices, we can ensure that our industry continues to flourish in harmony with the planet.
The hospitality industry can play a pivotal role in protecting our oceans by adopting practices that minimize environmental impact. From reducing single-use plastics to implementing water conservation measures, hotels can significantly decrease their contribution to ocean pollution. We can also educate our guests about the importance of marine conservation, encouraging responsible behaviors such as reducing waste and supporting local, sustainable products. By leading with these initiatives, we not only protect our oceans but also inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

What advice do you have for other hotels looking to become more sustainable and may be considering joining the Ocean Friendly Hotels program?
Join! We all share the responsibility of protecting our environment and by participating in the program, we are not only doing our part, but also educating others on how simple changes can make big impacts.
Can you share a guest story or piece of feedback you’ve received about your sustainability efforts?
Absolutely! One story that stands out is from a couple who stayed with us for their anniversary last month. They were particularly impressed by our sustainability efforts, which they said enhanced their overall experience. In their feedback, they praised our eco-friendly guest amenities, especially the refillable glass water bottles, metal straws and the bamboo toiletries. They mentioned that these small touches made them feel that their stay was luxurious without compromising the environment.
