Tropi Shack is a “refresh and relax yourself” beach bar located in Pozuelo, Guayama, Puerto Rico. With everything this Ocean Friendly Restaurant has to offer, you won’t ever want to leave! This spot is a favorite of the Surfrider Rincón Chapter. At Tropi Shack you can eat plastic-free, rent surfboards, shop at “Siempre Tropi” and “Flora pal corazón,” read, play table games and billiards, and even take an art workshop. We spoke with the owners, Nicolas Matta and Cristina Muñoz Laboy to hear how this OFR came to be and learn more about their sustainability efforts. 1. Tell us about Tropi Shack.
Tropi Shack is like a "refresh and relax yourself" beach bar located in Pozuelo, Guayama, Puerto Rico. We sell craft local beers, cocktails “de la casa”, smoothies, açai bowls, coffee, and healthy snacks. We offer surfboards for rent, and we have the physical shops of “Siempre Tropi” and “Flora pal corazón.” We have books, table games and billiards for use. We recently opened “JARDIN: taller creativo”: an art workshop for adults and, of course, we are proud to be the sixth and only place in the south of Puerto Rico to be an Ocean Friendly Restaurant.
1. Cuéntanos sobre Tropi Shack.
Tropi Shack es un loca frente a la playa para refrescarse y relajarse, ubicado en el barrio Pozuelo en Guayama, Puerto Rico. Vendemos cervezas locales artesanales, cocteles de la casa, batidos, açai, café y picadera liviana. Ofrecemos alquiler de tablas de surf, contamos con la tienda física de “Siempre Tropi” y “Flora pal corazón”. Disponemos de libros, juegos de mesa y billar para su uso. Recientemente inauguramos “JARDIN: taller creativo”; un taller de arte para adultos y, por supuesto, estamos orgullosos de ser el sexto y único lugar en el sur de Puerto Rico en ser un restaurante ¨Ocean Friendly¨ al momento.

2. I see that you have a clothing brand and art studio associated with Tropi Shack? How did those come to be?
In 2017 we started our independent projects “Siempre Tropi” and “Flora pal corazón”, a long way before we met. “Siempre Tropi,” created by Nicolas Matta, is a clothing and accessories brand inspired by the beach, surf, and Puerto Rico’s tropical life, and “Flora pal corazón,” created by Cristina Muñoz Laboy, is a colorful and bold art project inspired by endangered flora.
Tropi Shack was the perfect opportunity to grow “Siempre Tropi” and take it from being an online shop to a physical store in front of the beach. It adds a lot to the space because for example, sometimes people don’t know you can rent a surfboard here and if they don’t have a swimwear or long sleeve to protect their skin and go to the beach, then, problem solved, we have cool options here for them. On the other side, Cristina is an artist, so from the beginning she had the idea of guiding our whole project with art in mind. “JARDIN: taller creativo” opened to be a safe space where adults can explore their creativity and make art casually, mostly with self-guided experiences.
2. Veo que tienes una marca de ropa y un estudio de arte asociado con Tropi Shack. ¿Cómo surgieron?
En 2017 iniciamos nuestros proyectos independientes “Siempre Tropi” y “Flora pal corazón”, mucho antes de conocernos. “Siempre Tropi”, creada por Nicolas Matta, es una marca de ropa y accesorios inspirada en la playa, el surf y la vida tropical de Puerto Rico; “Flora pal corazón”, de Cristina Muñoz Laboy, es un proyecto artístico colorido inspirado en la flora en peligro de extinción.
¨Tropi Shack¨ fue la oportunidad perfecta para hacer crecer “Siempre Tropi” y pasar de ser una tienda online a una tienda física frente a la playa. Es algo que le añade mucho a la propuesta porque por ejemplo, a veces la gente que llega no sabe que aquí se puede alquilar una tabla de surf y se motivan, pero no tienen traje de baño puesto o manga larga para proteger su piel e ir a la playa, y entonces el problema está resuelto. Tenemos opciones interesantes aquí para ellos. Por otro lado, Cristina es artista, por lo que desde el principio tuvo la idea de guiar todo nuestro proyecto teniendo en cuenta las artes. “JARDIN: taller creativo” abrió para ser un espacio seguro donde los adultos puedan explorar su creatividad y hacer arte de forma casual, principalmente con experiencias autoguiadas.
3. Why did you join the Ocean Friendly Restaurants program?
As a place located in front of the beach, we knew how important it was to open a space that gives people the opportunity to make a right choice for nature, at least during their visit to our place. Joining the Ocean Friendly Restaurants program was a way to speak louder about the trash problem at the beach and how we can work hard on it. Even if it is buying a beer can and putting it in the cans identified bin to be recycled after, for sure it is a big step. For us it is important to show people that it is not impossible to become more conscious about our impact on nature, starting with the daily choices.
3. ¿Por qué te uniste al programa ¨Ocean Friendly Restaurants¨?
Como estamos ubicados frente a la playa, sabíamos lo importante que era abrir un espacio que le diera a las personas la oportunidad de hacer elecciones pensando en la naturaleza, al menos durante su visita a nuestro lugar. Unirse al programa ¨Ocean Friendly Restaurants¨ fue una manera de hablar más fuerte sobre el problema de la basura en la playa y cómo podemos trabajar duro en ello. Incluso, si se trata de comprar una lata de cerveza y colocarla en el contenedor identificado para reciclarla después, seguro que es un gran paso. Para nosotros es importante mostrarle a la gente que no es imposible volverse más conscientes de nuestro impacto en la naturaleza, empezando por las elecciones diarias.
4. What sustainability efforts do you have in place and why is being sustainable important to you?
Both of our projects are fully inspired by nature, so in 2022 we started Tropi Shack: a place where both projects stick together and bring much more to offer. From the beginning we knew that we didn’t want plastic straws or disposable cups, so if you are drinking here, we give you a bamboo straw, and for the orders to go we use the agave-made ones. In Tropi Shack we only sell canned beers because we are recycling them while collaborating with World Metal Recyclers. The cocktails, coffee, smoothies, and açai bowls to-go are served in compostable containers. Being eco-friendly is the center of our projects, and every decision we make for our business is based on how we can impact nature, community, and our professional and personal life.
4. ¿Qué esfuerzos de sustentabilidad tiene implementados y por qué es importante para usted ser sustentable?
Nuestros dos proyectos están completamente inspirados en la naturaleza, por lo que en 2022 iniciamos Tropi Shack: un lugar donde ambos proyectos se unen y aporta mucho más a nuestra oferta. Desde el principio supimos que no queríamos sorbetos de plástico ni vasos desechables, así que si decides tomar en nuestro local te entregamos la bebida con un sorbeto de bambú, y para los pedidos que son para llevar utilizamos los compostables. En Tropi Shack solo vendemos cervezas enlatadas, pues tenemos un proyecto de reciclaje en colaboración con ¨World Metal Recyclers¨; por otra parte, los cócteles, café, batidos y bowls de açai para llevar se sirven en envases compostables. La naturaleza es el centro de nuestros proyectos y cada decisión que tomamos para nuestro negocio se basa en cómo podemos impactar la naturaleza, la comunidad y nuestra vida profesional y personal.
5. What are some challenges associated with reducing single-use plastic that you had to overcome?
Living sustainably can be a little bit pricey, but it is a choice we made for good, and after all, we are on an island, so we need to be responsible with everything that surrounds us and try to be the more conscious we can.
5. ¿Cuáles son algunos de los desafíos asociados con la reducción del plástico de un solo uso que tuviste que superar?
Vivir de forma sostenible puede resultar un poco caro, pero es una elección que tomamos para bien y, al fin y al cabo, estamos en una isla, por lo que debemos ser responsables con todo lo que nos rodea e intentar ser lo más conscientes posible.
6. Do you have any advice for restaurants looking to make more sustainable choices?
At the beginning, for sure there is going to be a high difference economically talking, but there are many ways to work on it, and you don’t need to change everything from one day to another. You can simply start from reusing things, looking for a recycling program near you, and do not buy stuff if you do not need it. You can start giving the napkins only if the client asks for it, it’s a great way to start educating your community for the future changes in your place and tell them you are moving forward on making sustainable choices. The clients appreciate when you make them part of the process and changes. And for sure, the easiest way to make better choices is doing research about options to start living more consciously and eco-friendlier, think deeper and decide whatever fits with your project the most (including financially, of course) but make it. Even if you think it is a small change, do it.
6. ¿Tiene algún consejo para los restaurantes que buscan tomar decisiones más sostenibles?
Al principio seguro que va a haber una gran diferencia económicamente hablando, pero hay muchas maneras de trabajarlo y no es necesario cambiar todo de un día para otro. Simplemente puedes comenzar reutilizando cosas, busca un programa de reciclaje cerca de ti y no compres cosas innecesarias. Puedes comenzar a regalar las servilletas solo si el cliente las solicita; es una excelente manera de comenzar a educar a tu comunidad sobre los cambios futuros en tu lugar y decirles que estás avanzando en la toma de decisiones sustentables. Los clientes aprecian cuando los haces parte del proceso y de los cambios. Sin duda, la forma más fácil de tomar mejores decisiones es investigar sobre opciones para empezar a vivir de forma más consciente y ecológica, pensar más profundamente y decidir lo que mejor se adapte a tu proyecto (incluso financieramente, por supuesto), pero hazlo. Aunque creas que es un pequeño cambio, hazlo.
7. What does the ocean mean to you?
We practically have a mantra that says: “El agua salada lo cura todo”, which means that the saltwater cures everything, and sure it does. The ocean can help you heal, and the most beautiful thing is that it invites us to listen, and to be present.

Prácticamente tenemos un mantra que dice: “El agua salada lo cura todo”, y seguro que sí. El océano puede ayudarte a sanar, y lo más hermoso es que nos invita a escuchar y a estar presentes.
8. Anything else you want to share?
Things happen when instead of talking, we act. Represent and be an example of the change you want to see in your environment and the world.
