Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Alvin developed an early connection to the coasts, forests, and communities that continue to shape his work today. As Surfrider’s Puerto Rico Programs Coordinator, he supports coastal restoration, community engagement, and stewardship projects throughout the archipelago. His work focuses on connecting people with the places they care about, whether through mangrove restoration, dune and coastal forest projects, conservation education, hands-on volunteer programs, or partnerships that support long-term stewardship.
Alvin brings nearly a decade of experience in conservation, forestry, ecological restoration, field research, and science communication in Puerto Rico. Before joining Surfrider, he worked with the U.S. Forest Service, where he led the Puerto Rico Champion Tree Program and helped share the stories of some of the island’s largest and most iconic trees. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a master’s in Agronomy and Soil Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico.
When he’s not working on restoration projects, you can usually find him exploring the islands, spending time in the ocean, checking out trees, or finding another excuse to be outside. A conversation with him will probably include a fun fact or two about plants.
