Surfrider Foundation Hosts Global Celebrations for  International Surfing Day on June 18th

San Clemente, Calif., June 16, 2022 - On Saturday, June 18, the Surfrider Foundation and international affiliates will host events across the globe in recognition of the 18th annual International Surfing Day (ISD) to celebrate ocean recreation and the protection of clean water and healthy beaches. Held each year on the third Saturday of June, the global holiday founded by the Surfrider Foundation brings people together to enjoy the ocean, waves and beaches and to inspire action to protect these resources for all people.

The theme of this year’s ISD is ‘the Beach Belongs to Everyone.’ Local events have previously ranged from surfing, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking competitions to beach cleanups and collaborations with organizations to bring kids and underserved communities to the beach. Now in its 18th year, ISD has grown into the largest global activation for Surfrider each year, with more than 200 events taking place worldwide in 2021.

“International Surfing Day is a special moment every year for surfers and beachgoers alike to enjoy and show gratitude for the gift that the ocean brings to all of us,” said the Surfrider Foundation’s Senior Director of Marketing and Communications, Eddie Anaya. “As an organization, Surfrider is committed to protecting this precious natural resource while fostering a vibrant, inclusive and fun community. The beach belongs to everyone and on this day, we celebrate with all wave riders and ocean enthusiasts. We invite everyone to join our efforts to keep our waterways clean and our beaches healthy.”

Established in 2005 by the Surfrider Foundation and other surf industry organizations, International Surfing Day was created to raise awareness and support for our world’s ocean and coastal environments. The event has now grown into a global activation with up to 200 events taking place worldwide in more than 30 countries with over one million participants in the last decade.
