Activist Spotlight: Paige Brue With the North Orange County Chapter

What is your current role with the Surfrider Foundation, and when did you get involved?

I'm currently the Ocean Friendly Garden Coordinator and the Secretary for the North Orange County Chapter. I first became involved in 2023. I wanted to get involved because I was aware of the amazing work Surfrider does, and I wanted to be a part of that. I have also always been passionate about improving surface water quality, which aligns well with Surfrider’s mission and values.

What are some issues that affect water quality in your community?

Like many other places in California, trash and plastic pollution is a problem here. It impacts our terrestrial and marine ecosystems as well as people’s general enjoyment of the beach.

How is your chapter responding to those issues?

We have been a part of the San Gabriel Working Group who has organized the effort to construct a trash interceptor along the San Gabriel River between Seal Beach and Long Beach.

What has been the highlight of your Surfrider experience?

A highlight of my Surfrider experience has been meeting other Surfrider volunteers at the 40th Anniversary Summit in 2024.

Why is being a part of the Surfrider ocean conservation community important to you?

Being a part of the Surfrider ocean conservation community is important to me because, like many others who are involved with Surfrider, I care deeply about the ocean and California’s waterways.

Protecting these precious natural resources is essential for the health of our planet and future generations. I have also made wonderful friends through Surfrider, and it’s amazing to be a part of a group that is making a positive impact on the community.

What is the most important thing you tell others about Surfrider?

The most important thing I would tell others about Surfrider is that it is an organization that brings together passionate people who aren’t just talking about change. We are in our communities making a difference through action.

Thanks so much, Paige! Anything else you’d like to add?

Surfrider has allowed me to engage with a group of amazing people who care about their environment and the community. I would like to thank Kathryn Dressendorfer and the North OC Chapter for their support in helping me revive our chapter’s Ocean Friendly Garden program.
