After a holiday hiatus, Surfrider Foundation’s weekly California coast and ocean policy podcast, Protect & Enjoy, is back with our first episode of 2021. Hosted by Surfrider California Policy Manager Jennifer Savage, the weekly short-form podcast features updates and action alerts from around the state, advice on plastic free living, and imperative science factoids brought to you by Beachapedia, Surfrider’s coastal knowledge resource.
In this week’s episode we acknowledge and condemn the violence that took place in the U.S. Capitol and call upon leaders at all levels of government and civil society to promote the truth and enable the mutual respect needed to resolve our differences, and not fan the flames of baseless information and conspiracies. Serious threats face our ocean, waves, beaches and planet and a functioning democracy is essential to overcoming them.
On the state level, the California Coastal Commission meets this week and, as usual, we’re paying attention to and commenting on several projects related to coastal erosion, water quality and access equity. Surfrider California Policy Coordinator Mandy Sackett gives listeners a quick overview of the specifics and why they matter.
Moving from the (virtual) meeting room to the home, San Francisco Chapter Rise Above Plastic Coordinator Olivia Angus provides one of her biweekly “Simple Swaps.” This week’s is the ultimate in reducing your plastic footprint and perfect for the new year.
Finally, we take an important look back at 2020 with staff scientist Katie Day and this week’s Factoid. SPOILER: This one is all about the billions and billions of dollars extreme weather events cost the United States last year.
