Initiative Update: Dirty Beaches and Dangerous Bioplastics!

Happy Plastic Free July! This week, your Plastic Pollution Initiative team has been busy following up on the dirtiest beach day of the year, busting myths about bioplastics, and gearing up for our annual Beach Cleanup Report coming out next week!

A small sampling of Surfrider’s July 5th efforts in the news:

Can we bioplastic our way out of this mess?

For readers of our Ocean Friendly Foodware Guide 2.0 and Bioplastics Toolkit, a report, "Demystifying Compostable and Biodegradable Plastics" by Beyond Plastics, will look familiar. The report provides an overview of bioplastic materials currently on the market, the standards and labels out there, and scientific research findings on their safety. Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Programs Manager CJ O’Brien Weddle talked to Environmental Health News on how Bioplastics are inadequately defined, poorly regulated, and potentially toxic.”

You can find out even more with our Bioplastic Guidance for Ocean Friendly Restaurants (English) & (Spanish) and bioplastics facts and resources webpage!

And as always, your membership supports our efforts toward plastic-free, healthy oceans, waves, and beaches!
