Pantalones Organic Tequila x Surfrider: A Sustainable Spirit with a Coastal Connection
By Janie OverlandFounded by none other than Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves, Pantalones Organic Tequila is a cheeky, fun 100% Blue Weber Agave organic Tequila. Pantalones Organic Tequila is committed to delivering high-quality and sustainability-created tequila. With the Surfrider’s Foundation’s mission to protect our ocean and coastal environments, we are pleased to host official partnerships with planet-conscious brands such as Pantalones.
Pantalones Organic Tequila was inspired by the handcrafted margaritas McConaughey was making when he met his future wife, Alves, at a nightclub on Sunset Boulevard. With the bold, playful name “Pantalones”—Spanish for “pants”—the founders set out to create a spirit that honors the tradition of agave farmers while upholding a commitment to environmental responsibility.
Similar to the founding values of Surfrider, Pantalones Organic Tequila demonstrates their environmental stewardship from the ground up. Starting with the soil, the company is proud to work with fourth-generation agave farmers and utilize a completely organic method of growing. In order to reduce waste, Pantalones Organic Tequila uses upcycled agave pallets for shipping, working with BIOPALL by Green Loop. Post production, Pantalones upcycles their agave fibers (bagasse) and remaining liquid (vinasse) for composting*.
By refraining from using synthetic pesticides or chemicals, Pantalones Organic Tequila supports Surfrider in protecting our ocean from harmful runoff from synthetic pesticides and protects water sources that feed into coastal ecosystems. These potent pesticides and chemicals fuel harmful algal blooms which make waterways and beaches unsafe for humans and natural ecosystems following heavy rainfall. Land-based agriculture and marine health are deeply connected; everything we do on land flows to the sea.
Pantalones Organic Tequila has joined the Surfrider Foundation to host collaborative beach cleanups from the East to the West coast, as well as the Gulf of Mexico. At a recent beach cleanup at Venice Beach in Los Angeles, in collaboration with fellow Surfrider partner and supporter, ALPAKA, the team collected over 60 pounds of trash, including 625 cigarette butts! This important data will be used by Surfrider’s team to advocate for reducing single-use plastic waste at the source.
