Shaping California's Future: Advocating for National Monuments

California is renowned for its rich and diverse landscapes. These awe-inspiring lands and waters are in constant need of protection from over-development, pollution, and the impacts of climate change. That is why Surfrider, along with our dedicated allies, are part of a movement that aims to protect the natural wonders and cultural treasures of the Golden State through National Monuments. The efforts to establish National Monuments have been led by the leadership and active engagement of Tribal Nations across California. Their perspectives and knowledge on their unceded ancestral lands play a central role in the ongoing campaigns, including:

Ensuring the lasting protection of these lands and waters honors the persistent efforts of Tribal Nations, guaranteeing that future generations can continue practicing age-old traditions on pristine lands. We urge President Biden to take action by establishing and expanding over 1 million acres as National Monuments.

California's diverse landscapes, from the captivating coastline to the sprawling deserts, will benefit from the conservation efforts of National Monuments. These areas will effectively conserve and enhance the natural environment, preserve cultural integrity, and provide recreational opportunities. A considerable portion of the proposed protected areas is essential for the well-being and sustainability of millions of Californians, serving as a vital water source. As we confront the escalating impacts of climate change, the establishment and expansion of National Monuments become crucial and our actions will resonate in the landscapes we leave for generations to come. Presently, monuments like the California Coastal Monument protect 8,000 acres of unique land and marine habitats along 1,100 miles of coastline. Extending from the sea to the desert, these monuments will embody a commitment to conservation that shapes our collective legacy.

President Biden has a unique opportunity to establish National Monuments that will not only protect the environment but also aid in our adaptation to climate change. By preserving awe-inspiring landscapes, especially those significant to Tribal Nations, we can create a lasting legacy of conservation for generations to come. Now is the time to expand protections upstream to desert valleys and mountains, ensuring a comprehensive approach to environmental conservation.
