Victory at San O!
A New Lease Preserves Continued Public Access

Surfrider is thrilled to announce that California State Parks and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton have finalized a new lease agreement for San Onofre State Beach. The 25-year-long lease between State Parks and the Marine base ensures continued public access, management, and protection of this beloved coastal resource into the future.

This marks a significant win for the “San O” community and the thousands of visitors who visit here annually from around the country and the world. This victory also continues Surfrider’s ongoing campaign for uninterrupted public access and a resilient shoreline at San Onofre State Beach.

Your support, and the dedication of our partners at San Onofre Parks Foundation, helped make this victory possible. It is yet another milestone in Surfrider’s long history of preserving this iconic stretch of California coastline through our 15-year-long Save Trestles campaign and beyond.

San Onofre State Beach is the ancestral home to the Achajemen village of Panhe, a native habitat to 12 endangered species, at the mouth of one of the last remaining undammed streams in California, and the site of multiple world-renowned surf breaks. Surfrider remains committed to ensuring this incredibly rare stretch of undeveloped coastline remains protected and accessible to the public for all to enjoy for generations to come.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to advocate for smart coastal planning and strong stewardship at San O.
