2024 Surfrider Found Objects Art Contest in Partnership with REEF
By Janie Overland, Hero Image Art by Mindy Kombert @mindykrAs the co-founders of the Better Beach Alliance, Surfrider is proud to present the winners of this year’s Found Objects Art Contest in collaboration with our longtime partner, REEF!
In its eighth year, the Found Objects Art Contest invited beach goers to share items that they found from their local waterways and beaches in an artistic and creative way, taking the phrase “one person’s trash, another person’s treasure” literally. The contest is a natural extension of the Better Beach Alliance in that its ultimate goal is to raise awareness and offer creative solutions to the threats of single-use plastics on our marine environment.
Each entry, from the winners to honorable mentions, highlights the importance of tackling ocean pollution and draws attention to the ongoing need to protect our coastlines. We are always humbled by the incredible creativity shown by each and every participant!
First Place, Monika Mira @moreresponsibleliving
"I make art out of marine debris because I love it, and I hope my art will inspire others to take action!" - Monika Mira
Second Place, @lisabagwell
Third Place, Kitty Mahoney @kittaycaboodle
"So I sketched out some simple outlines of whales, turtles, and seabirds to cut out of wood and started sorting through the plastic. Turns out the plastic was really perfect for making mosaics with." - Kitty Mahoney
Honorable Mentions
Surfrider and REEF extend a HUGE thank you to all the wonderful participants and the amazing art they created! Contests like this are not just about art, but about raising awareness of the harmful effects of marine debris and inspiring others to play a role in reducing ocean pollution.
You can join us in the battle against ocean pollution through beach cleanups, participating in your own plastic pollution reduction initiatives in your daily life, or through joining Surfrider and becoming an official friend of the ocean.
