The Surfrider Malibu: Where Luxury Meets Ocean Advocacy
Just off the iconic Pacific Coast Highway and steps from the waves of world-famous Surfrider Beach, The Surfrider Malibu is more than a boutique hotel — it's a heartfelt tribute to California's surf culture and coastal heritage.
With just 20 thoughtfully designed rooms, this reimagined beach house offers guests an intimate, guest-only experience rooted in sustainability, ocean protection, and laid-back luxury. Now, as a proud member of Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Hotels Program, The Surfrider Malibu is setting a new standard for what it means to travel responsibly. The Surfrider LA Chapter connected with Rebecca Buchanan, Director of Special Projects of Casetta Group and Arielle Morton, the GM of Surfrider Malibu to discuss their ocean-friendly practices.

A Stay That Gives Back to the Sea
The Surfrider Malibu has built its brand on sustainability and community, and it shows in every detail.
As a platinum member of the Ocean Friendly Hotels program, The Surfrider Malibu follows all of the program’s sustainable criteria. This means they comply with all the mandatory elements — such as avoiding the sale of plastic beverage bottles, Styrofoam, or toiletries in small plastic bottles — but they also go the extra mile by following all of the additional recommended practices when only three are required to be in the program. Some of these include: avoiding single-use coffee pods in hotel rooms, using room keys that are reusable or from naturally occurring materials, and only stocking reef-friendly sunscreen in their gift shop.
In addition, staff uniforms are sourced from Outerknown, the ethical clothing company co-founded by professional surfer Kelly Slater. These garments are crafted from chemical-free, naturally dyed materials and feature plastic-free buttons made from nuts in a Peruvian village. Even worn-out jeans from Outerknown’s SEA line are recycled into hats and bags, closing the loop.
Single-use plastics are nearly nonexistent on-site, aligning with Malibu’s local plastic regulations. From recyclable to-go containers to biodegradable minibar treats, The Surfrider goes the extra mile to eliminate waste. Their chocolate bars even come in compostable wrappers embedded with native wildflower seeds — literally helping guests plant the future.
Inside each room, energy-efficient mini fridges with low-absorption technology and LED lighting show how sustainability and comfort can work hand in hand. And on the bar menu, you’ll find alcoholic and non-alcoholic spirits, some certified as B Corporations based just down the road in Venice, California.

Beyond the Walls: Beach Cleanups & Local Impact
At The Surfrider, sustainability extends beyond the property line. The hotel hosts monthly beach cleanups in partnership with Gnarwhal Coffee Co. a Surfrider Ocean Friendly Restaurant, helping preserve the natural beauty of Malibu’s coastline and inviting guests to participate in real environmental stewardship.
The commitment also shines through in their curated wine list, featuring small-batch organic and biodynamic producers. One German winemaker even farms exclusively with horses — eschewing machinery in favor of ecological harmony.

Why Ocean-Friendly Hospitality Matters
“The hospitality industry has a massive role to play in protecting the ocean,” says The Surfrider Malibu team. “By adopting sustainable practices and aligning with organizations like Surfrider Foundation, we can reduce our footprint and inspire our guests to do the same.”
This commitment has made a real impression. One guest, initially drawn to the hotel’s aesthetic and location, was so moved by their sustainability story she recorded a podcast episode on-site and inspired a series of follow-up articles spotlighting the hotel’s ocean-first ethos.

Growing Into the Future
Sustainability at The Surfrider is always evolving. An edible garden on the Roof Deck was designed to provide fresh, local ingredients while reducing carbon impact. The team is also continuing to seek out and support new sustainable partners, ensuring every decision reflects their deep connection to the environment.
Advice to Fellow Hoteliers
The Surfrider encourages other hotels to begin their sustainability journey with intention — but not perfection.
“Start small and partner with people who share your values. You don’t have to be an expert to make an impact. Set attainable goals, learn as you go, and build a culture of sustainability over time.”
